New Mexico Spelling Bee info

September 2010

Spelling Bee Coordinators:

The Albuquerque Journal and Newspapers in Education are again sponsoring the New Mexico Spelling Bee. Spellers from 25 counties in New Mexico are eligible for the 2011 bee.

Here are the steps you must take so your students will be eligible to participate in the New Mexico Spelling bee:

  1. Register your school with the Scripps National Spelling Bee at www.spellingbee.com before October 15.  A fee of $99 is mandatory for spellers to be eligible to participate in the New Mexico and national bees. For the fee, schools receive Web access to classroom bee word lists and the School Pronouncer Guide. Schools enrolling after the October 15 deadline will be assessed a late fee of $75.
  1. Hold county, Albuquerque and Rio Rancho school district bees before Feb. 1, 2011. Registration forms for spellers will be sent to county and district coordinators in January.  The number of enrolled schools in each county, APS and RRPS will determine the number of eligible spellers for the New Mexico bee. One speller will be accepted for each 10 (or portion of 10) schools enrolled with the national bee.
  1. Prepare a set of rules and word lists for school, county and district competition. Your officials have control of their bees. Their decisions are final. New Mexico Spelling Bee officials cannot override any school, district, or county bee decision. However, Jan Jonas, New Mexico Spelling Bee Coordinator, is available for advice or training sessions.
  1. Provide an opportunity for any student, whether in public, private, parochial or home school, to compete in local, district, county and cluster bees. Every effort should be made to include all interested students.
The New Mexico bee is scheduled for March 12, 2011. The specific location in Albuquerque, date and time will be announced in mid-September. Check the Web site www.abqnie.com for updated information. You will also find the Word a Day feature for spellers to study.

The winner of the New Mexico Spelling Bee goes on to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 1-3, 2011, in Washington, D.C. The champion and a parent’s airfare, hotel, food and official tour expenses will be paid for by the Albuquerque Journal and Newspapers in Education.
